Ontario Feed-in Tariff (FIT)The Ontario government is helping develop a renewable energy industry for the province. The government hopes to replace jobs lost during the recent economic downturn and ensure the province's energy future by establishing a strong renewable energy industry. The passing of the Green Energy and Green Economy Act (Bill 150) and government offered incentive programs, demonstrates the high level of government commitment. The Ontario Power Authority released its Feed-in Tariff (FIT) program in 2009 to incentivize the investment of renewable energy systems. Renewable energy is incentivized to make it cost competitive with highly subsidized forms of traditional electricity generated by fossil-fuel combustion and nuclear fission. FIT contracts offer guaranteed payments to the system owner over a 20-year period for electricity delivered into the local utility grid. This model was adopted from similar incentive program structures which were successfully implemented in Europe. In addition, feed-in tariff programs are currently being explored in the United States in concert with established renewable portfolio standards and rebate-based incentive programs. Provided below are a flowchart published by the Ontario Power Authority of a typical FIT project application process and tables of tariff rates based on qualifying renewable energy technology and ownership.
